United took on Rovers at King Georges hoping to end 2013 the way it started with a victory. A few last minute drop outs meant a change of formation to 4-3-3 with United looking to attack Rovers from the start.
It started well for United as after 8 minutes it was 1-0. Andrew Sheekey winning a header which fell at Dan Musther's feet and he ran at the retreating Rovers defence and broke clear and neatly flicked it over the onrushing keeper and into the net.
It could have been 2-0 on 12 minutes when a lovely ball over the top by Michael Earles to Gary Simmons was drilled at goal only for it to bounce back off the post.
On 18 minutes though the United pressure told and it was 2-0. The Rovers keeper made his only mistake of the match with a kick out from the edge of his box that fell at Jonny Angus' feet and he took one touch before lobbing the ball in from 30 yards.
Half Time - Wearside Rovers 0-2 Wear United FC
No clear cut chances for either side until the 82nd minute when United struck the bar. A great piece of play from centre back Iain Ray ended with a pass to Andrew Hodgson and he played a neat one-two with Steve Walls and Hodgson was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the bar and went over.
United made it 3-0 on 86 minutes. Jonny Angus starting a move with a pass to Steve Walls who released Kyle Hepple on the right. His shot came back off the bar to Andrew Hodgson on the line and he defended the ball brilliantly which was harder to do than score but luckily for him it fell to Jonny Angus who dragged the ball back onto his left foot and placed it into the corner
United finished the game with a 4-0 victory with the last kick of the game. Andrew Hodgson playing the ball across the box from the left and Kyle Hepple looked like he was going to score but he miskicked the ball into Steve Walls' path and he tucked it neatly into the bottom corner just before the full time whistle
Special mention to the Rovers keeper who kept the score down with some superb saves.
