What a great game !!
This was always going to be a tough game against a very good Burntwood team.
This week we started off with the right attitude & were first to everything getting our challenges in \7 working hard.
Our reward was an easy tap in after a great run & cross byCharlotteleft Amy L about 1m off the line to take advantage of an open goal.
They always say you are at your most venerable just after you have scored & this was the case, after a good run & shot from Burntwood we had a mix up & misunderstanding at the back from the resulting goal kick allowing Burntwood to pounce on the free ball & level the score.
The second half was equally as hard fought as the first with us having the better of the chances with Holly, Charlotte & Jess all going close. If it wasn’t for the woodwork we would have taken a commanding lead as we hit the frame of the goal 3 times but they all came out instead of in.
After one of our numerous attacks Holly stepped up to take the corner \7 struck a beauty curling it directly into the far top corner giving us the lead again, as with the first goal within 2 minutes Burntwood were back level when we allowed the ball to bounce around the box instead of clearing it fully & Burntwood slotted in the equaliser.
2-2 at full time & off into Extra time we went, Burntwood had a good break & for the first time in the game found the back of the net to take the lead for the first time in the game.
We had a few chances but at the end of the first half of extra time we were still 3-2 down, with only 5 minutes of extra time to go it was time to make some radical changes & try to get us back on level terms. We swopped the formation around & went for the unorthodox 1-3-4 upside down Christmas tree formation !!
With only a minute left on the clock we won a corner after some desperate defending by Burntwood, they say lightning doesent strike twice but it does at Sutton United as Holly curled another corner straight into the top corner 3-3.
Not for the first time we ended up with the lottery of the penalty shoot out, unfortunately it wasn’t to be our day despite the best efforts of the girls who were brave enough to step up & take one of the penalties andMariasbest efforts to keep them out.
Even though it was very disappointing to be knocked out of the cup I have nothing but pride in the way the girls played, on another day we would have won the game in normal time as we had some great chances, it just wasn’t to be our day.
Well done girls lets keep playing the football we know we can & take the performance with us into next weeks game at Coundon Court we need to get a good result out of this game to hopefully regain top spot in the league.
