South Cerney travelled to F.C Ampney of Warsaw for their second league match of the season with only 9 team members out of the 18 available, and only some last minute wheeling and dealing meant they were able to honour the fixture. A big thanks goes out to Jack Ayres and Sean Kielty, (who even had to leave his pork pie behind as he was dragged from the dinner table to take part) for helping out and filling the extra two places.
Cerney however started the match much the better against there Polish counterparts and kept the ball well for the opening 10 minutes. They were unlucky not to go infront when our Craig spotted the keeper off his line from an 80 yard free kick and after bouncing over Vasily in goal the ball rebounded off the woodwork. Cerney however took a deserved lead soon after when a neat cross from Jack Ayres eluded Slavan in the Ampney defence and was nodded in at close range by Dan Hughes, who scored his first goal for the club. Ampney however got back in the match when a corner from Luca was turned home by Aleksander from close range after some slack defending. Ampney furthered their lead mid way through the half when Dariusz fumbled an effort passed the helpless Cat in goal to take the lead. Cerney had chances to equalize before half time when Keen went through one on one but couldn't finish and Ayres had a decent effort saved well by Vasily but they went into the break a goal down.
The killer goal came early in the second half when the ref missed a blatant hand ball from Jarek and his pass was turned home by Marik to further Ampneys lead. Cerney however were resiliant and never gave up and got themselves back in the game when Ayres' through ball fell to Keen and he made up for his earlier miss with a lovely lob over the keeper. Cerney continued to press and got their deseved equaliser when Ayres again done well on the wing and crossed for Keen to head home for his second of the game. With Cerneys hopes now high as they looked the more likely of the 2 sides they were quickly dashed when Ampney scored further goals from Pavel, Rostek and Tomiasz to put the game out of reach. Cerney however battled on to the end with Dickson finishing well after a through ball from Scottish Dave who brought the family along especially for the game. Ampney kept their 3 goal advantage when Rodney scored about 30 seconds later to end a miserable afternoon for Cerney who were lucky not to be beaten further when Dickson decided to start on Tomiasz, who would surely have beaten the fuck into him!
In a post match interview with Jeff Shreeves, manager Rennie was said to be 'delighted' with the effort of his depleated squad despite conceeding 15 goals in their opening 2 league games and added that with 6 different centre halves in 3 games he really needs to add some consistancy to the side, but with people cancelling late on it made his job impossible. With next weeks must win match away to Stratton United he needs all players available for the fixture to secure their first league win and restore some confidence in the team, who at times look like they have the making of a good side although they must strengthing the defence.
