Today we send B "Liniker" J:
The Lincs Cup hasn’t been the best of competitions in recent years for The Mighty Scuns and 2010 proved no different. With four away on international duty, injuries mounting up and cats to be rescued from trees in Immingham there was a totally new look to the Scuns starting eleven ultimately meaning that new positions were being taken up by players. Bank holiday Billy made his second appearance of the season and fitted straight in whilst three new faces from Haxey made their debuts. Two from the start in the form of Ginner and Mick whilst Stanno would get involved a bit later but we will get to that shortly.
Despite not keeping hold of the ball to well it was Scuns who made the early running but it was clear that there was a lack of cohesion although Scuns continued to be the better side. Alford looked bright and created a couple of chances and it was one of those chances which they converted on the break to give them a half time lead.
Half time arrived and with a spare keeper and James ‘one-liner’ Chatwin on the bench it was the same 11 that took to the pitch but not all 11 would finish it!
Scuns battled and there was no lack of effort but chances were at a premium. Eventually the equaliser came when the ball broke from a corner and Fowler drilled the ball home with his left foot. Well, actually I am not even sure it hit the back of the net!
Chapman continued his impressive record by getting booked but that was just the starter as the mains were on the way. A through ball split the Scuns defence and the nippy Alford striker went through one-on-one with Kenny and the ever committed keeper made his mind up but mis-judged the challenge and, despite the protests, it was an early bath for the number 1.
Maybe it was fate that a sub keeper was brought along as Mick was sacrificed and Stanno took over between the sticks and took control immediately showing a good presence.
With 10 men, Scuns looked like they thought they could sneak a victory but no more goals were forth-coming and so it was straight to penalties.
With the Scuns five penalty takers decided up stepped Dave K. A sweetly struck one but the keeper pulled off a great save. Alford made no mistake with their first one. Next was Chopper, aka Mr Reliable, aka Mr Cool. Just not this time! The ball appeared to move before striking it and the keeper saved. Oh dear.
Stanno proved his worth with a good save making it 1-0 to Alford at two rounds. After that, Nicol converted his spot kick but so too did Alford. 2-1. Kemshall was next who made no mistake but again so did Alford. 3-2. This meant Chapman had to score. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and the kick was saved.
Not a good day at the office for The Mighty Scuns and with Ceefax the only option in the bar it was into Alford town centre where Sky Sports appears to have never been heard of!
