Sundays Kent Trophy game goes down in history as the furthest Millfield FC Reserves have been in the competition.
We started the game much better then the last few weeks, putting the Magic under pressure early on.
With the slippery conditions not helping either team, we were soon 2-0 up and playing some great football.
Jim on the score sheet again, after a bit of a goalmouth scramble he taps in from close range. Hugo swings in a great free kick, Luke jumps and misses but puts the keeper off enough for the free kick to go straight in.
We have a few more chances to score and were well on top, the game could have been over before half time. But as usual over the last few weeks, we lost concentration and let in a sloppy goal from a defensive error.
Another free kick from Hugo delivered into the area, which hit a Magic player and flew into the net.
Ian pulls off some great saves to keep it at 3-1. One point blank, which I don’t think he knew to much about.
Half time came and we were comfortably 3-1 up, the Magic didn’t cause us many problems and we were in control. The boss identified we were playing down the middle too often; we needed to get the ball wide where there was lots of space.
We needed to calm down and stop just booting the ball away when we had time to make a pass.
Second Half started, after the ref kept us waiting on the pitch for at least 5mins in driving rain. We started slow again, not sure if it was the pissing down rain or we just switched off. We were soon 3-3, another two defensive errors. Conditions we also to blame (not easy for the defence) as the ball skids of the floor missed judged by the defence and kindly falls to the Magic’s attack.
We continued to put the pressure on and after a cross from Jim the ball hit a defender and went in.
Kevin (while running the line) managed to get booked for something, unsure what! The referee wanted words with Kevin and Dean before play continued.
Lee came on for Dan who had just got booked for kicking a Magic player off the pitch, Lee got straight into the action by going in hard on the Magic’s forward. Needless to say the forward was off the pitch for a few minutes.
But we got on top again and after some great forward play by Adam we got a penalty, which Kaylem put away with style.
We scored the 6th fairly late on with some great work from the midfield, long pass from Neil to release Kaylem to slot home.
6-3 and cruising!! Harry comes on for Kaylem.
They score again, unfortunate goal. Corner kick comes in from Magic; defence clear to the edge of the area only for a Magic player to react quicker and score.
All in all a win!! We do need to tighten up defensively, but we have a few defenders out who will make a difference. We have a great team with a lot of good players. We show at times how good we can be, but bad decisions and sloppy passing let us down.
