LVS Hassocks started the new season in fine fashion with a superb 5-1 victory over Frewen College. A hat-trick for Kynan Kirlew-Wright and two goals for Liam Pope guided the purples to a win that may prove to be the benchmark for the rest of the season.
After the summer break, LVS Hassocks players were eager to get back to action, and start the new season with a win. Thanks to a great team display with neat passing moves and clinical finishing, they got the win their performance deserved.
LVS started strongly and it didn't take long for them to break the deadlock. Kynan Kirlew-Wright raced onto Liam Pope's through ball and poked it past the keeper to make it 1-0.
The lead was doubled soon after. Last season's top scorer Liam Pope struck his first goal of the new campaign. Charlie Ries-Coward found the attacking midfielder who powered the ball into the corner from long range.
The game settled and the visitors started to get hold of the ball. Many of their passing moves were thwarted by the strong back three of Kain Wilkinson-Liddiard, Josh Baker, and Cameron Ellis. Thomas Thornton was also playing well in his holding midfield role.
At the other end chances were being created fequently, with William Dunne, Kynan Kirelw-Wright, Lee Tarron, and Liam Pope all seeing efforts narrowly miss the target or saved. The passing between the team was pleasing on the eye and very little rustiness was evident.
Half Time Score: LVS Hassocks 2-0 Frewen College
The second half sprung a shock for the purples, as Frewen College seemed like a totally different side. They came out with determination and battle. They were first to every ball and played the ball between themselves purposefully.
They managed to grab a goal back early in the half, when their left winger broke forward and tucked his shot just inside the post to make it 2-1. It was no more than their efforts deserved and the goal challenged LVS to respond.
It didn't take long for Hassocks to respond. Kirlew-Wright notched his second of the game, making his finish look easy after being sent clear by Liam Pope. The ball nestled in the bottom right corner of the net as the home crowd could sit slightly more comfortably in their seats.
The whole squad was being used as Donny Rodgers kept making changes to keep the team fresh. Gregor Sumner, George Harris, and Charlie Ries-Coward were all playing exceptionally well when they took to the field, and adapted brilliantly to a variety of different positions.
The personel changed, but the performance was unaffected as the neat passing continued. LVS made it 4-1 from a well worked corner routine. Lee Tarron whipped in the corner before William Dunne's accurate flick on was smashed home on the volley by Kynan Kirlew-Wright. The technical quality of the strike, combined with the brilliant move made it the goal of the game.
Chances at both ends continued, with Joe Bedding continuing to show why he is so highly regarded by the coaching staff at the school. His saves were top drawer and his dictatorship of the penalty area and everything that dared to move within it was frighteningly dominant as always.
The icing on the cake came late on in the game with Liam Pope slotting home after great work down the right flank by Lee Tarron. More chances to add to their advantage came and went, but the Hassocks side could be proud of decent victory.
