Victory over AFC Kirkby (previously known as FC Nou Camp) at Windy Arbour made it 4 wins out of 4 and took our goals for tally to an impressive 32 in just 5 games. Renowned for always being a tough place to play football the squad who where missing a number of key players showed tremendous character and atoned for last season's defeat when we were on the wrong end of a 4-1 defeat. Neither side showed any creativity in the opening stages and it was looking as if it was going to be a tight game, Steven Hargreaves was looking the most likely to create an opening as he put in 3 excellent delivery's in the box but neither found a green shirt, the closest we came to scoring was on 37 minutes when Andrew Evans put in a cross from the left hand side with caused a mix up between the keeper & the baby faced centre half who very nearly put the ball into his own net. With both Gavin Heard & assistant manager Tony Cosgrove plotting their next move just 60 seconds before the break the deadlock was finally broken when Liam Geordeson pulled the ball down and clipped in a deft cross which found Evans who's brilliant effort hit the post fortunately the birthday boy tapped in the rebound which put him on double figures for the season. (Half time 0-1)
Ste McGarry the new "Dude" on the block replaced Brian Kerwin at the break and Geordeson was moved out to left midfield as it was clear that that's were we felt we'd get more joy attacking the flanks & it proved to be a shrewd move as within 13 minutes off the re-start McGarry had created a goal for Geordeson & got amongst the act himself with a looping finish over the keeper who was then ambushed with the height of abuse from the right winger who had a kipper like a bag of spanners (only in Kirkby do you get ugly mugs like that!!). Gerrad Allt who was fairly redundant throughout the game even got in on the act with an assist when his long kick just past the hour mark fell to Evans who got his 2nd of the day & 11th of the campaign, he should however have recorded his second hat-trick in a week just 5 minutes later when he missed an absolute sitter which even overtakes Ian Jordan's howler on the opening day vs Dunnies making him the new hot favourite to pick up The Ronny Rosenthal Award!, goal number five was again created by "Dude" and smashed into the net by Geordeson who kept up his record of scoring in all 5 games so far. James Gregory who was struggling with an injury late on was pushed up front and his ariel threat enabled a 6th goal to be scored when his diving header left the keeper rooted to the spot. AFC Kirkby scored a late consolation which was the only downside to what was a very good team performance with plenty of positives for both Heard & Cosgrove to contemplate in the weeks ahead.
Man Of The Match: James Davies: His form was suffering in the previous 4 games at right back but today he revelled in central midfield winning every tackle and looks to have given the team a new option in the engine room.
