After a run of cup games, it was back to league action as Horndean traveled to Drayton park to play Fleur de lys for the second week running. The team talk before the game was to forget the 3-0 cup win last week and start from fresh. The players were left in no doubt what was required as they prepared to kick off. On a small bobbly surface the game began a little scrappy as both teams attempted to adjust to the conditions. Horndean got to grips with it first taking the lead as Scott Caws finished a Matt Cotton cut back. Fleurs then produced a 10 minute spell of pressure as they looked for an equalizer. The Reds weathered the spell before moving into a two goal lead. Good play got Matt Cotton in behind again and Matts center was Volleyed home by Lawrence Moore. Horndean now took control of the game and despite the conditions, passed the ball around beautifully looking for an opening. A third goal looked likely and on 30 minutes Lawrence Moore Volleyed his second from a Jack Grover Cross. H.T Fleur de lys 0 - 3 Horndean youth More of the same was the half time team talk as well as great words like focus and concentration. The reds started the second half like they finished the first, moving the ball quick & sharp. Great play down the right got Jack Grover away and Jacks cross found Joe Nash to rifle home Horndean`s forth goal with another well taken volley. Horndean`s play was now a joy to watch as patient 2 and 3 touch football was the order of the day. On 60 minutes, a quick passing move found Henry Moore on the edge of the box. Henry turned his man and hit an unstoppable shot which ended up high in the Fleurs net for 5-0. Max Wilson then finished off a great performance from him, smashing the reds 6th goal past the Fleurs keeper after a Jack Grover through ball picked out the run. Final score: Fleur de lys 0 - 6 Horndean youth Managers view: I have to be honest, i wasn't expecting the level of play the team achieved today. The pitch was small enough to shoot easily from the half way line and this was evident with the keepers kicks going the full length of the pitch straight to the opposition keeper on a regular basis. I expected a more tight physical encounter, but the players showed what they are capable of with a very impressive display of passing football. Some very well taken goals a well and a clean sheet also, so an all round performance. Player of the match goes to Scott Caws showing his versatility playing very well in 2 positions.
