Away league match played on 15 February 2025.
Kicked off at 2:00 PM

Abbey Villa F.C 2nds faced off against Rosario YC 2nds in a tightly contested league match at the Ulidia Playing Fields on 15 February 2025, kicking off at 2:00pm. The home side emerged victorious with a final score of 1:0.

Abbey Villa adopted a 4-3-3 formation, which allowed for a dynamic attacking approach while maintaining defensive solidity. Ben McConkey stood guard in goal, with a back four comprising James Edwards and Curtis Williamson as the right and left defenders, respectively, while Matthew Edwards and Matthew Dempster anchored the central defence. In midfield, Daniel McFarland operated on the right, Jake Rainey took up a central role, and Marcus McGrath provided width on the left. Up front, Jake Wilson and Kyle Irwin flanked striker Mathew Burke, who was tasked with leading the line and converting chances into goals.

The substitutes for Abbey Villa included James Boyd and Joshua Colville, who would be called upon later in the match to influence proceedings from the bench.

The match began with both teams probing for an early advantage, but it was Abbey Villa's Jake Wilson who made the first attempt on goal in the 12th minute, though his effort went wide of the target. As the first half progressed, Mathew Burke had a chance to put Villa ahead in the 30th minute, but his shot was saved by the Rosario goalkeeper, keeping the scoreline level.

However, disaster struck for Villa in the 36th minute when a defensive mistake allowed Rosario to take the lead, capitalising on the error to score the opening goal of the match. Villa responded with determination, and Daniel McFarland came close to equalising just before half-time, but his shot also went wide, leaving the score at 1-0 in favour of the home side at the break.

The second half saw Villa come out with renewed vigour, but it was James Edwards who found himself in the referee's book in the 55th minute after a so-called bad tackle, putting him on notice for the remainder of the match. Tactical changes were made in the 71st minute when Marcus McGrath was substituted for James Boyd, as Villa sought to regain control of the midfield.

Daniel McFarland continued to be a threat, testing the Rosario goalkeeper again in the 76th minute with a shot that was saved. As the match entered its final stages, Jake Wilson had the best opportunity of the game to level the score in the 82nd minute, but his effort sailed high over the bar, to add to growing frustrations.

In the 86th minute, Villa made their second substitution, bringing on Joshua Colville for James Edwards, as they pushed for an equaliser. Despite their efforts, the match ended with Villa unable to find the back of the net, succumbing to a 1-0 defeat against table topping Rosario YC 2nds.

Mathew Burke was recognised as the standout performer for Villa, demonstrating determination and tenacity throughout the match, even as his side faced adversity which earned him the Man of the match award.

A hard result to take as the boys showed great spirit and commitment, especially in the 2nd half. Pinning the home side in for the majority. And with young Ben in goals not having a save to make. The defeat will hopefully serve as a learning experience for Villa as they look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
