In a gripping encounter at Adams Park, Millisle, Abbey Villa F.C 2nds faced off against Crumlin Star 2nds on 30 November 2024. The match, which kicked off at 2:00pm, ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw, with both teams showcasing their determination and skill throughout the contest.
Abbey Villa adopted a 4-3-3 formation, which allowed them to maintain a solid defensive structure while also providing width in attack. The backline consisted of Ryan Murray and Curtis Shannon as the right and left defenders respectively, with Matthew Edwards and Louis Gault-Reid forming the central defensive partnership. In midfield, Daniel McFarland operated on the right, Jake Rainey in the centre, and Daniel Beach on the left, providing both creativity and support to the forwards. Up front, Carson Mann and Kyle Irwin were positioned as right and left forwards, flanking the central striker, Mathew Burke, who was tasked with leading the line and finishing chances.
The substitutes for Abbey Villa included James Edwards, Mark Gilliland, and Marcus McGrath, who would later play pivotal roles in the match.

However, the match took a turn for the worse for Abbey Villa when Mathew Burke received a yellow card for a bad tackle in the 37th minute. The first half concluded with Abbey Villa holding a slender 1-0 lead.
The second half began with a renewed intensity, but it was Crumlin Star who struck first, equalising in the 59th minute following a defensive mistake by Abbey Villa. In response to the mounting pressure, Abbey Villa made a substitution in the 67th minute, bringing on James Edwards for the shattered Louis Gault-Reid.
And just a moment later, in the 68th minute, Crumlin Star capitalised on another Villa error, taking the lead with another close-range goal, after a direct long ball from the Star goalkeeper made it's way through to goal.
Tactical changes followed shortly after, with Mathew Burke making way for Mark Gilliland and Carson Mann being replaced by Marcus McGrath in the 70th minute.
As the match wore on, tensions rose, Villa manager Nikki Caskey was booked for complaining about a clear and obvious error from the referee. This was then followed up with Louis Gault-Reid receiving a yellow card for dissent from the sideline. Just when it seemed Abbey Villa might succumb to defeat, they found an equaliser in the 86th minute. Marcus McGrath, who had only recently come on, scored from close range after a great through ball from Daniel McFarland and a well-timed lay off from Mark Gilliland, bringing the score to 2-2.
In the dying moments of the match, both teams sought a winner, but Villa looked the stronger. A booking for Curtis Shannon on the 87th minute for a supposed foul, before Kyle Irwin had a chance in the 88th minute but his shot went high, while Mark Gilliland's attempt in the 90th minute also flew over the bar. The referee, Glen McKinstry, brought the match to a close, leaving both teams to share the points in a match that was as entertaining as it was fiercely contested.
Daniel McFarland's performance stood out, earning him the accolade of Man of the Match, as he played a crucial role in both defence and attack, contributing significantly to Abbey Villa's efforts. Excellent.??
