Southport Athletic Football Club is an English association football club based in Southport, Merseyside. They play their home matches at The Big Help Stadium, which has a capacity of 5,414. They are known by their nickname "the Sandgrounders".
History
The club was founded in 1881 and played in the Football League from 1921 to 1978, reaching the fourth division championship in 1972-73. They have also won a number of titles in non-league football, including the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 1992-93 and the FA Trophy in 1999-2000.
The club currently plays in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.
