Belfast Celtic FC was a football club founded in 1891 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It was one of the most successful teams in Ireland until it withdrew permanently from the Irish League in 1949.
History
The club was formed by a group of Irish nationalist students who wanted to create a team that would represent the Catholic community in Belfast. The club's first home was Celtic Park on Donegall Road, which was nicknamed "Paradise" by the fans.
Belfast Celtic won its first league title in 1900, and went on to win a total of 26 league titles, 22 Irish Cups, and 14 City Cups. The club also reached the semi-finals of the European Cup in 1961.
In 1948, Belfast Celtic's players were attacked by a mob after a match against Linfield. The club subsequently withdrew from the Irish League, citing political reasons. Belfast Celtic played its last match in 1960.
Legacy
Belfast Celtic is still remembered as one of the most successful and popular teams in Irish football history. The club's former ground, Celtic Park, is now a listed building.
In 2017, a new Belfast Celtic FC was founded. The new club is based in Glen Road Heights, and plays in the Amateur League.
