More about the team
Formed in 1901 as Netley Sports, the club have enjoyed a long and rich history in county football. Winning all manner of honours over the years including cups and divisional titles. The club renamed as Netley Central Sports and a growing link to the nearby social club was cemented.
In 2019 the club found itself facing hardship as longstanding stewards of the club looked to stand down en masse and take a much deserved break. In entered the local side AFC Itchen that seemed to be the perfect remedy. While the time in grassroots level football was much shorter than the committee of Netley Central Sports, their 5 years as a club had seen them grow steadily at their local level. Perhaps most significantly, the committee already had a reputation for caring about grassroots clubs and had previously taken on other teams close to folding, enabling them to continue on. With the AFC Itchen committee able to take up the roles required to run Netley Central Sports, in 2019 it was voted on at each of the clubs AGM's, with each club voting in favour of the merger, and so AFC Netley came to be, the result of a merger to keep this historic name and club involved in the local football scene.
Lastly, a thank you to all the people who have been involved with the respective clubs throughout the years, the volunteers, players, committee members and fans. There are far too many to list but to name a few, Jim Langdown, Alan Croucher, Ray Parlour, James Nash and last but by no means least, 'Mr Netley', Bob Crompton.
