The Woodlands travelled to Snaith to take on a new look Oddfellows side and were in for a surprise. Athletic started brightly with Stannard and Adam Heywood working well down the left side, however, on the 15 minute mark it was a route one long ball from Costello that put Heywood SNR through on goal to fire into the top corner from 12 yards out.
Woodlands then started playing some good football but were caught a couple of times on the break by the young Oddfellows side. With 25 minutes gone Rob Butler was fouled in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Sim Sharphouse stepped up but his shot was saved by the keeper. The save spurred on the home side and they enjoyed a good spell of play leading to an equalizer 10 minutes before half time. The Oddfellows striker picked up the ball 25 yards out and dispatched a shot that stand in keeper Lee Moore could only get a hand to. The half time whistle blew with the teams level.
The visitors knew what was required of them in the second half but got off to a slow start losing possession easily and not linking up well in midfield. This allowed the home side to get a foothold in the game and they took the lead on the hour mark after some sloppy defending. Evans cam onto replace Stephenson and inject some pace up front. He scored almost immediately after a cross from Wheldrake was headed wide from close range. The Woodlands were stagnant but a formation change to 3-5-2 moving Sharphouse into the centre gave them a lift and it was all Woodlands for the remaining 25 minutes. Stannard was working hard and bringing Heywood and Wheldrake into the game. One such passage of play putting Heywood through on goal but the strike from his weaker right foot was wide.
The introduction of Danny Young at the expense of Rob Butler invigorated Athletic and a period of pressure led to the equalizer. With 10 minutes to go a long throw in by Costello was attacked by Young before falling to Heywood who bundled it home. Momentum was now with the visitors and they were in the lead 5 minutes later when a Heywood corner was latched onto by Stannard who claimed the goal his performance deserved. With 2 minutes left to play Woodlands looked comfortable and went on the attack but a late SURGE by Oddfellows resulted in a free kick on the right hand side of the area. The free kick was swung in and Tom Kinghorn who was pushed by the attacker was adjudged to of handled the ball. A poor decision by the referee who had an otherwise faultless game. With the final kick of the game the Oddfellows scraped a draw.
A performance from Woodlands which will be remembered more for the battling spirit shown in the dying stages rather than the quality
