Today Wendover Mens FC first team were looking to continue their 100% start to the season and establish an impressive 6 wins from 6 games played.
After securing good league wins already this season today's game was a real test as it was an away fixture against Longwick fc who were sitting second in the table, one place above Wendover, but having played a game more.
The game started with the Wendover's black and golds very much in the ascendancy and a route one goal (keeper to striker) saw Jamie Spurdenscore his first of the day in the opening minutes.
From then Wendover's ever impressive duo in central midfield (Jack Thomson and Bruno Passaro) were bossing the game and frustrating the home side and when jack went into a 50/50 with a longwick midfielder the home players temper boiled over and resulted in him throwing a punch and kick at jack. This inexplicably only resulted in a caution for the Longwick player, but moments later he lost his head again and tried to put a leg breaker of a challenge in and was shown his second yellow and his marching orders!
Now against ten men Wendover were in complete control of the game and another goal from Jamie and Darren Woolards forever customary goal made it a comfortable 3-0 at half time.
The home team re shaped at half time with their ten men and made it harder for us to break them down but when they got themselves another silly red card the boys got back to business and Jamie bagged himself the match ball with his third, then late on Tom Sheppard and Tristan got a goal a piece to put Wendover 6-0 up! The next goal would take some of the icing off the cake as a lack of concentration cost Wendover a clean sheet!
Final score 6-1 to the Wendover boot boys.
The best news was still to come as with teams around them loosing the result put Wendover fc top of the league and with games in hand on their rivals!!!
A special thanks to Barry Purcell for again coming down to show his support, we will miss it when you leave for Newquay buddy!
