Uni mount Quiche vs Eastern Suburbs 2-0. (A defenders perspective)
The eagerly awaited return of (fairy) centre back Ben Perry had
arrived. And a clean sheet was always on the cards.
The Quiche so far this season have looked great, but have had a few
shock upsets against teams of a sub standard. Saturdays opposition
certainly weren't a sub standard team, and as we did against waiheke
we stepped up to the occasion and got a solid win to bolster our
position in second place. The re introduction of some key players was
also a major contribution to us winning this game.
The Quiche started the game strongly and played some great football
and pretty much dominated the first half. Although we had a few
chances it wasn't until late in the half that we opened up the scoring
through a calmly placed shot from Tom Hayward, who was set up by a
wonderfully carved through ball by Mp. Eastern Suburbs nearly got back
into the game as their striker broke through the defence and into our
penalty box, however a last ditch /superbly timed slide tackle by MOM
Ben Perry meant the Quiche went into the break 1-0.
We went into the second full of confidence and we looked good for the
first 10 or 15 minutes. But Eastern Suburbs turned up the heat and
started applying pressure on our back four. We were made more
vulnerable and the back and less threatening going forward as Tom left
the field due to a liver strain. The physio described it as a lack of
alcohol in the system or something like that. The game started heating
up and some rough challenges were being dished out. Our very own
Hobbit Matt Banks went on the offensive and sat a few people on their
arses!! Boom! A cool head was needed from our match official Larry, as
the Suburbs boys started flaring up due to frustration at a lack of
goals. Ray didn't help proceedings as he really managed to get under
the oppositions skin with a few choice words, well done mate.
The game was getting down to the wire and our defence were really put
to the test, it seemed to be a case of when they would score not if
they were going to score. Chris managed to pull of a great reaction
save pushing the ball over the bar and keeping us in the game.
However within the last 15 minutes Eastern Suburbs through the game
away with a blatant push inside their penalty box. As usual our very
own ass hole David Davies stood up to the plate and slotted home a
very well struck penalty, maintaining his 100% record. That was the
nail in the coffin for Suburbs and the Quiche managed to pull through
to the end and got a well deserved win against a team that are still
only one place behind us.
A big thank you to our loyal fans and mascot who sat through some
pretty torrid weather to cheer us on. As Matt Banks's mum liked to
point out the MOM award was controversial this week. But when you have
enough coin to pay the man making the decision who cares about
controversial. I was Awesome!
Until next time....
