Heavy fog set in over both the pitch and The Turf in a one-sided encounter at the Delves Lane Community Association Pitch. The opening stages of the match witnessed the Top Club take the lead in the opening four touches of the game. A stray back-pass to the goalkeeper was intercepted and quickly transformed into a goal straight from kick-off, allowing the visitors to take the lead in the first minute.
The game pressed on as the Turf attempted to regroup and get our heads back into the game, but the rushed passes and bad decision making cursed the pitch throughout, leading to unnecessary pressure of our own making. A poorly-timed tackle mixed with an attacker looking to go down in the box led to a harsh penalty call by the ref. However, the woodwork would come to our rescue this time, leaving the scoreline at 1-0.
The Top Club continued to apply pressure, doubling their lead with floated ball into the back stick, and a missed chance to head the ball clear, landing perfectly for a straightforward tap-in by the striker, demonstrating their attacking prowess and efficient movement in the final third. The Turf FC, unable to respond, found themselves on the back foot, and Consett capitalised again, making it 3-0 midway through the first half. A chaotic goalmouth scramble resulted in the ball slipping through a defenders legs, and ending up in the net, leaving The Turf FC's defence scrambling and their goalkeeper helpless.
Despite the daunting scoreline, The Turf FC endeavoured to regroup at half-time, but the second half began in a similar fashion. A miss-kicked pass from the fullback landed straight to an opposition player, who passed it on for a long-range strike slipping under the goalkeeper's grasp.
The Turf seemed to find some sparks of life in the form of substitutions, coming off the bench and adding some joy to the side, who began playing as a team, passing the ball with ease around the opposition, and creating perfect opportunities to jumpstart a comeback. However, it was all in vein as every shot was kicked straight towards the Top Club's keeper for some straight forward saves. Top Club managed to score yet another goal in the 70th minute, again benefiting from a poor pass from the goalkeeper, landing at an attackers feet, who took the ball on and slotted it home for five. The visitors showed little mercy as they added a sixth near the end, capitalising on a breakdown in communication and creating yet another scoring opportunity inside the box.
Referee Ged Boyle’s performance was under scrutiny, as some decisions did not sit well with The Turf, who felt aggrieved by a few calls that went against them, adding to their frustrations throughout the game.
As the final whistle blew, The Turf were left to contemplate a heavy defeat that highlighted significant defensive frailties, while Top Club celebrated the victory that, honestly, on another day, could have gone the other way, with a surplus of poor passing and shots not taken, the Turf will feel hard-done by and that they deserved more.
