In another impressive display of football (insert adjectives here), the Stormcats ventured out into a wet miserable Friday evening to inflict pain on a once proud 2010 & 2011 Premiership winning Black Knights outfit.

Sadly, the Knights were without their recent acquisition in self proclaimed star striker Ivan the Terrible, sidelined by a crippling calf injury.

The Stormcats were slow to start and were barely warming to the task at hand when startled by a long range opposition speculator that squeezed it’s way between the cross bar and Simon’s outstretched hand. 0-1.

This seemed to fire the Cats into action and it wasn’t long before the ledger was squared. A series of well strung passes down the left flank found Wilton at the edge of the penalty area. The red glow in his eye was a telltale sign his cyborg-like  brain was busy calculating the permutations. This lead to Wilt’s ultimate determination of smashing the ball low and hard into the remaining defenders leg thus causing a deflection away from the keeper and inside the left post. Definitely intentional, this was no own goal. 1-1.

Neilo was enjoying plenty of space in the middle of the park (pretty sure he told everybody to stay away because he had a “really bad cold”).

It wasn’t long after the own goal  Wilt’s goal that Neilo, in space, took the ball at his feet, ran at full speed for 3 metres and released a long range effort on the fly that was inches off being millimeter perfect as the ball rattled the cross bar.

Our second goal was again the result of some well constructed passes which culminated in yet another long range screamer from Hoser. Strangely this time, his effort required no assistance from the keeper as the ball blasted sweetly off the outside of his right boot and swung like a wire-guided-missile into the top right corner. 2-1.

By now the Knights were shell shocked but their night was to get worse. A beautifully weighted through ball down the left found the flying Abdul running goal bound. With abundant pace to round the chasing defenders, Abdul fired early from distance. Once again, the ball fired sweetly off the boot hard and flat into the top left of the goal. 3-1

After the break, the host’s reformed with a determination that found us defending in our own half for much of the second 40. Each attacking raid was thwarted by a solid defence headed by Hosie as he inflicted a number of well timed leg wrenching clearances.

Notably, for all their time in our half, it was still the Stormcats enjoying the majority of scoring chances at the other end.

The final goal came late in the game after a tight defensive effort was converted into attack from a determined but well guided clearance from Hosie which sent Abdul on a carbon copy run to drive home his second goal for the evening. 4-1.

After the game, a spokesperson for the Knights suggested that, mercifully, things could have been different had Ivan the Terrible been fit for play. "Ivan tends to be a 2 goal difference. We wish him well and encourage him not to be too hasty in his return".

Once more a great effort throughout. We held our form, we held our heads (mostly) and crafted a well deserved win.

I don’t want t be the one choosing a man of the match each week. There is a facility on the web page to cast your vote anonymously. But for me, this week’s man of the match goes to Hosie for maintaining a tidy backline amongst some steady attack.
