Smugglers Inn V Society
19-10-2014
Smugglers are pitted against a team 2 divisions above them today but with both teams missing a few players both teams feel like they will be able take a positive result from the game.
After a scrappy opening it was Smugglers who started to take control of the game making Society do most of the running but were unable to create any openings to break their defence down.
20 minutes in and Society are awarded a soft penalty. Linton went to ground to try win the ball but the attacking player made the most of the opportunity and fell over the defender leaving the referee with an easy decision. Society tuck the away the penalty. 0-1
With the rest of the half being played with each team trying to force a counter attack but both teams defences were doing a good job of nullifying the attacking team.
Fowle almost grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of half time as his 30 yard drive looked destined for the top corner but whistled just over.
HALF TIME 0-1
Society came out the second half and took the game by the scruff off the neck. 5 minutes later they were awarded a free kick out on the left hand side. With no real danger looking to come from it, the left back floated a ball deep into the box catching the keeper off guard as it flies straight in to the net. 0-2
Smugglers were very much still in the game with them dictating most off the play but their final ball was letting them down. It was soon to be so costly as with society punting a long ball forward the defender and keeper didn’t take command off the situation allowing the attacker to nip in an prod the ball home. 0-3
Fowle almost pulled a goal back with 20 to play as the ball broke in the box, the striker swivelled on the ball to get his shot away only to see it cannon off the cross bar and away to safety. Not to be out done Richardson found space on the edge of the area and smashed his shot towards goal only to be denied by the crossbar also.
Society found more space as Smugglers went on the search for a goal. It wasn’t long until they got the ball through to their forward who had the simplest jobs to tuck the ball away. 0-4
Society probably deserved their victory on the day but the score line was very flattering and Smugglers will be looking to bounce back in their next group game to try and advance in the competition.
FULL TIME 0-4
