A return to league action after a few weeks playing in different cups saw Saxmundham Sports entertain Sproughton at Carlton park. The weather was ideal for football and the pitch was well prepared.
Saxmundham started off well and took the game to the visitors and it wasn’t long before the early pressure resulted in the first goal. Sax won a corner which was delivered by Tommy and was half cleared by the shaky looking defence, Tommy picked the ball up a delivered it back into the back post where it was met by Kurt to head home and settle the early nerves. The rest of the half saw a few chances for both teams with Sax coming closest Tommy hitting the bar from a corner and a few other chances that we should have taken. Sproughton had a few chances but their woeful finishing shows why they are where they are in the league.
Half Time Sax 1 – 0 Sproughton
The second half started well with the lads responding to the half time team talk and coming out and playing football like we all know they can, Sam had moved up to Right mid and this move resulted in him taking on the defence and delivering a ball across the box that went all the way through to Stevie who was a yard out and probably scored the easiest goal he will score all season. As usual we were a little unlucky with key players picking up injuries at crucial times Kyle went off as a precaution after he had a knock on his ankle. That meant that Jack went into midfield and Cuzzy went into goal . The reshuffle gave the visitors a lift and they got a goal back after a long punt forward went all the way through to leave one of their players one on one and he scored to make it 2-1. 5 minutes later Sam had made another good run and he got fouled in the box, all eyes went to the ref and he didn’t let us down by pointing at the spot. With Kyle off the pitch Jack pulled rank and grabbed the ball an excellent penalty was in the back of the net before the keeper (who no-one else on his team seemed to know) had a chance to move 3-1. The visitors did get another goal back the same way as they got their first. The ref who was a much better standard than we normally have blew the final whistle on time and we got the 3 points that we deserved and ended a 33 match winless streak in the league. Jack was awarded MOM, Tom Wilson continues to get better with each game and did everything except score.
Well done to all today I even got accused of being a poor manager for taking the piss out of the visiting players it seemed to work as if you are worrying about me you aren’t concentrating on the game.
Next week we “welcome” Sizewell to Carlton park and we have 3 new signings all available to take part if we need them.
