Old Town begin their campaign with a crushing and clinical 6-2 dispatch of newly re-formed Wanderers AFC. Given that we were playing against a team that have previously won the FA Cup on 5 occassions (in the late 1800s) it was a top drawer performance. In general we out-worked and out muscled them, coupled with some really good creative play in parts and a very solid looking back four, it proved too much for them. Some commentators have mentioned that we went from looking like Arsenal last season to Stoke this season and the Wanderers official match report confirms this:
‘Sadly, the comeback was not to be - Old Town size and pace showed in a tiring back line.’
A hat-trick from Simon showed how hard he worked in tiring their defence, a solid header and an assist from Pentland, and a goal for Rob Wood told most of the story. Three assists from Mercinho, in a man of the match performance, demonstrated how much he relished the Ashley Young role afforded to him.
It was also great to see Tromo return to competitive action after nearly 10 months out and popping up with an assist and a goal showed that he was as hungry as ever… Actually, hold on, news just in from Wanderers….
‘Mark Wilson put past Adam Wood trying to cut out a cross and the match ended with a final goal to finish Wanderers off.’
So that would be two assists and no goal then? Hard lines.
Special mention to three lads on debut Mark, James and Dave who all had a big impact on the game.
Also, great apre game performances all round with the post match session in Dulwich lasting until 11pm and including a game of curby on a main road, the crashing of two weddings, Liam falling off a fence, me stacking it on the tube and a colossal recreation of the Gladiators classic ‘Hang Tough’ on the Northern Line. It just went to prove the old addage ‘Win or Lose, Old Town booze’.
