It was noticed that the grass had been cut at Ancaster avenue but heaps of dead grass covered the playing surface making it hard to play decent football at times on a sunny Saturday afternoon, Donington started of the brightest of the two teams, with Kyle graves down the right wing having a lot of joy against the Spilsby town left back, it was from this outcome that Donington scored their first goal, good build up move, through ball to Kyle and his brilliant pass into the corridor of uncertainty for Jonny butler to run onto and slot home. There was a few glimpses in the first half that Spilsby could threaten, the defence had to be alert on a couple of occasions to thwart the Spilsby town attacks, but apart from a tame shot at the old dons keeper and a couple of wayward corners that was it, there was one nasty moment in the game were Kieran Rose was challenged from behind for a headed and a free kick was awarded to old dons ,but there player come of the worst spending the rest of the game on the sidelines with a bad facial injury, but the first half still ended with old dons one nil to the good.
Within ten minutes of the second half old dons were two one down, two goals nearly identical, the Spilsby players worked the ball across to the left hand side, and some awful marking presented the same unmarked Spilsby player with plenty of time to unleash two shots wide of Jamie hall’s right hand post and into the back of the net. This seemed to spur Spilsby town on even more and with the midfield and defence looking all over the place, was un-lucky not to add to their tally until later on; when the third goal did come it was nearly a repeat of the first two same style of move same finish. The last two goals just summed old dons afternoon up, a corner for the fourth goal floated over hitting Alex Woods on the far post and going into the empty net, even though with Liam Pitts still not pulling out of the tackles in mid field or Martyn Fox’s strong defending ,old dons couldn’t prevent Spilsby town from springing the off side trap, the player rounding the stranded keeper and sliding the ball into the unguarded net for their fifth goal, it could have been worse still if the referee hadn’t blown his whistle as another Spilsby player kicked the ball into the net for another goal, The only two worthwhile efforts in the second half for old dons came from the two most experienced players Andy Stanhope first with a lovely scissor kick volley direct from a corner that flew just over the crossbar and then player manager mark Stanhope, who went on a mazy run and from just outside the box curled a right foot shot just wide of the far upright . As the players walked of the pitch at the end i think it’s safe to say that most will not want a repeat performance like this for a while final score Spilsby 5 Old Doningtonians 1
