Away cup match played on 19 January 2025.
Kicked off at 10:30 AM

In a thrilling cup encounter held at the Wendron Football and Cricket Club Grounds on 19 January 2025, Newquay AFC Vets showcased their attacking prowess, defeating Wendron United Veterans 1st with a resounding scoreline of 4-2. The match kicked off at 10:30 am and was officiated by referee Lee-Anthony Lee, who had a challenging task overseeing the highly contested affair.

Newquay AFC Vets deployed their usual 3-4-1-2 formation, which allowed them to maintain a solid defensive structure while providing ample support for their forwards. In goal, Damien Boyle was tasked with keeping a clean sheet, while a back three comprised of Karl Morris on the right, Logan Capeling in central defence, and Dave Grose on the left aimed to thwart any attacks from Wendron. The midfield was anchored by Andrew Miles in the middle, with the rest of the midfielders providing width and support to the strikers. The two forwards were expected to exploit any defensive lapses from the opposition, creating goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match.

The substitutes for Newquay included Lewis Saundry, Steve Capeling , Martyn Probert, and Christopher Hall, who would later play pivotal roles in the match.

The first half was electrifying, with the action kicking off in earnest. Just after the half-hour mark, Martyn Probert was introduced to the fray, replacing Adam Weller. Almost immediately, Lee Rickard found the back of the net, scoring when put through by Ben Colquhoun his goal coming in the 32nd minute. His clinical finishing put Newquay ahead, showcasing their attacking intent.

As the half drew to a close, Ben Colquhoun added to the tally with a goal in the 45th minute, further solidifying Newquay's dominance. This goal was particularly significant as it came just before the half-time whistle, giving Newquay a comfortable lead going into the break.

The second half saw a flurry of substitutions for Newquay, with Adam Weller and Lewis Saundry coming on for Daniel O'Toole and Paul Osborne, respectively. The changes seemed to comfuse the team as they contrived to concede to quick goals from the home team, one a well placed header from a corner and the other a bizarre incident resulting in a penalty for the home team. In truth it was a weakly struck penalty that the away keeper Boyle pretty much dove past. Weller quickly made his mark by scoring a goal in the 73rd minute, demonstrating his ability to find space and finish clinically with his head from a well placed corner from Andy Miles.

As the match progressed, Christopher Hall was introduced, replacing Lewis Saundry in the 76th minute, while Paul Osborne came on for Lee Rickard in the 83rd minute, ensuring fresh legs were on the pitch as Newquay sought to maintain their lead.

In the dying moments of the match, Martyn Probert capped off an impressive performance by scoring well deserved goal in the 89th minute. His contributions not only highlighted his attacking prowess but also underscored Newquay's relentless pursuit of goals throughout the match.

Despite Wendron United Veterans managing to score twice when Newquay had only conceded 3 goals in the previous 7 games Newquay's offensive display proved too much for them to handle. The final whistle confirmed an emphatic victory for Newquay AFC Vets, who will take great confidence from this performance as they progress into the semi finals of the Sunday cup competition.l for the second season in a row.

Next up we are away to Grampound in league action on Sunday the 26th January 11am kick off. As usual good luck to all Newquay teams and a special congratulations to Dan and his impressive team for reaching the semi finals of the junior cup.

Cheers CAPES #upthemints
