Wanderers Premiers have opened their 2009 season with a win against Rangers. In front of a crowd of approximately 42 including several dogs Wanderers started the game brightly with Italian exchange student Marco di Russo looking sharp on the right. After several half chances by Peter Sheppard the game came to life with a superb cross from Matty Breen finding Brendan Berginey at the back post. Berg finished with a neat right hoof to the keepers left. Wanderers continued to dominate with Matty Breen missing a gilt edged opportunity to put the Devils two up with a crap effort from 35 yards which came back off the crossbar. Had he not turned away in disgust at himself he would have noticed that the ball had rebounded straight back to him hence giving him the chance to blaze it into the mangroves. On 33 minutes Berg received the ball from Pommy Nathan and in true Berginey style played at least 5 one twos with the Rangers defenders before somehow appearing on the other side of the defence for a simple hoof past the keeper. One minute later it was the Pandas turn with a great first touch from a Clint Lorimer defence splitting pass he coolly slotted the ball low to the keepers left. Four minutes later the game was effectively over after another Lorimer pass saw Berg hoof his third goal into the top corner past the static Rangers keeper. Half time Wanderers 4 Rangers 0 It's an old cliché but I have often heard it said "I wish half time hadn't come" Well it was true of this game. The second half was pants. Very little to report only that some little guy from Rangers got very excited when he scored and John Breen had a super 'Xabi Alonsoesque' effort from half way which unfortunately was saved by the Rangers keeper. Matty Breen, Isaac Webb and Jimmy Black (brought on by Stevie Craig in a forward role.... the cheek of the man, really rubbing Rangers noses in it) all had opportunities to put the game out of sight but none of them could hit a cows ass with a paddle. Final score Wanderers 4 Rangers 1 Wanderers :- Lally, Chad, Cameron, Tito, Webby, Marco, Sean (Pommy Nathan 25min), Clit, Shep (Jimmy 59min), Berg, Panda (Fletch 60min) Man Of The Match :- 3 sugar lumps for Brendan " The Diva" Berginey.
