Impulse VS SHP Athletic - 19/07/2009
Friendly Match - Pearce House, Bishops Stortford
Impulse started the pre-season term with the annual curtain raiser against SHP Athletic. Starting pre-season training earlier certainly showed its worth resulting in a demolition of recently promoted SHP Athletic 6-1.
The game took place behind closed doors at the neutral venue of Pearce house and with no sign of the infamous IFC firm, it was up to the WAGS and youth product Tyler Thurley to show their support and they didn’t disappoint!!
With Impulses legendary drink/drugs and gambling culture (only joking Beefy and Alex) still in full effect, training has recently been stepped up, by newly appointed 1st team coach Neil ‘Beefy’ Beet and the lads were rewarded for their hard work, determination and commitment on the training pitch with this comfortable victory (of which needs to continue if we are to achieve our goal of eventually winning some silver ware this season).
Under the new stricter regime it was good to see everyone meeting on time and enthusiastic about the game ahead.
Impulse dominated the early exchanges and it came as no surprise when one of last years top goal scorers James ‘Rags’ Huntly rose above the SHP defence to nod/chin the ball home from an in swinging corner from Josh ‘Hakan’ Saggers. Shortly after it was another corner with the same combination and outcome, with good movement (the hug and split manoeuvre) from Aaron ‘Jockey’ Johnson, Huntly was allowed a free header 6 yards out.
With an early 2 goal advantage, Impulse relaxed and started to pass the ball, and play the way we’re famous for, drawing a free kick 20 yards from goal the ever energetic Richard ‘Barney’ Barnfather was scythed down, allowing Saggers to line up a Cristiano Ronaldo Style free kick and crash it home through the SHP stoppers hands!?!?!
With new signings James Manley literally ‘terrorising’ the SHP rear-guard and AJ bossing the defence it was only a matter of time until Impulse extended their lead. Their 4th goal of the 1st half was an exact replica of 3rd, a ferocious left footed free kick from Saggers.
The half ended with SHP’s first attempt at goal, a shot over the bar after good pressure from Dominic Dewey. The management teams half-term team talk was an easy task “not get complacent and more of the same”.
After a number of changes by both sides, SHP came more into the game and but for a couple of good saves by Irish No1 Neil McClay they could have scored more. SHP did eventually find the net after some sloppy play by Impulse who began to unwind.
Heads however didn’t drop and Beefy got Impulses 5th goal with a low powerful drive from outside the box. Alex then rounded off a fine debut with the final and best goal of the game from a tight angle.
Mark ‘MH’ Howell came on towards the end to get some playing time under his belt after a long lay off with injury, and was unlucky not to score. Ben ’B-Tizzle’ Thurley was as solid and reliable as ever and trialist Danny Higgs impressed in a number of positions.
With 2 months until the start of the new season, there is still time to add to the squad and for players to nail down a starting place.
In conclusion of today’s master-class the new management structure seem to have a good selection headache ahead.
