Firstly sorry for the delay in getting this up but a week of Man-flu and Man-ic work meant I haven’t had a lot of spare time. Apology done, on with the report.
The late morning kick off along with a glorious day for football put everyone is a positive frame of mind and what followed was one of the best games of football I have seen the fliers put on. Abbey had a certain confidence about them after their 10-0 win over the Colts and our defeat by the Colts last week. Bill wound the boys up and they started with a bang. This time they were back to their passing and positioning from a few weeks ago and 3 minutes in they took the lead. A long kick by Ollie up-field saw some battling by Sam Lucca and Jack to gain possession. A timed pass found jack on the penalty spot who turned his defender and slotted home with a perfectly placed shot. More great football followed with Callum and Will clearing up the flanks and Jake vocal in the centre. This was the key to the day. Abbey are quite rightly sitting on top of the league. They have a couple of great players that tear other teams apart but with a strong midfield and the boys at the back covering each other this threat was nullified and on 11 minutes the Fliers lead was extended. Callum fired the ball up-field and a series of four one touch forward passes between Jack and Lucca saw Lucca find the net. Striking teamwork at its best. Abbey were in a state of shock and pushed everything forward. A brilliant save by Ollie down on his left kept them at bay but on the 15th minute they pulled one back. Some neat interchange saw them crack a shot on goal that Ollie saved, but the rebound was picked up by their forward and slotted in the net. Half time
The second half saw Jack move upfront and Lucca replaced by Ben. More great play was shown by both teams as Abbey Tried to equalise and the Fliers tried to extend. It was the Fliers who came out on top when Jack, as ever, chased down and battled to win the ball forcing Abbey into a poor clearance that reached Ben. With his best Aaron Ramsey impersonation he belted it from outside of the area into the top right. Lovely strike. The next 13 minutes saw pressure being brought to bare but the back line and Ollie held firm. However on the 39th minute an Abbey corner found their player on the front post who’s subsequent header to a fortunate deflection and into the net. By the time the boys kicked off the final whistle went and the Fliers fortunes were back on track.
