A win against Burton House would've seen us go above them in the league with only a handful of games left to play. We began the match and were utterly dominant in possession and skill, seeing the return of Kenna in defensive midfield encouraged us to play simple football and play with the ball at out feet, and once we were in our groove, Burton couldn't touch us.
During the first half, we took the lead with a simple tap in from resident captain JJ, but as the game pressed on, we failed at every turn to secure a second, even going so far as to have an atrocious miss off the line by JJ as the ball was whipped in and, somehow, headered OFF the line and out for a goalkick. Summing up our poor attacking for the rest of the game.
We got unlucky during some spells in the first half were we should have doubled our lead, with a stunning free kick twenty plus yards from goal as Owen stepped up to take it. Rattling the post as the ball was somehow kept out.
The first half pressed on and we still couldn't score, making their goalkeeper look great with all our poor efforts on goal, but still pulling off the occasional great save. However, on the defensive side of things, we we comfortable, with myself in goal, coming out and attacking the ball outside my box, sweeping away most chances Burton had, and if not making it in time, I had my defence to keep them at bay. Specifically with a ball through on goal, the attacker has knocked it passed me and took the shot, but Robbie was their to clear the ball away in time, saving our lead.
Halftime came and went, and as they kicked off, the game completely changed, tired legs needed to be replaced which was ultimately our downfall. Burton began to play around us the way we had in the first half, and once again by failing to score, we quickly lost our momentum as they picked up the pace. We became overwhelmed at the back.
We conceded our first goal to an unmarked attacker running in the box at the back stick as the ball was crossed into his feet and slotted home into the bottom corner. That's when the frustration kicked in and my own teammates got into my head, screaming down my neck, despite doing everything in my power to keep us afloat when they aren't scoring simple goals.
A completely unnecessary free kick is given to the opposition outside of the box, we set up to defend, and as the striker sends the ball over the wall, I had to make the dash across my goal and saved the shot, however, as rattled as I was, dropped the ball which fell to a lone attacker, completely unmarked by anyone as it was tapped in to make it 2-1. A terrible mistake that should have been avoided, I hold my hands up to it, but this is what happens when you don't score at the other end.
The final nail in the coffin came with yet another cross that fell to an attacker in the box as it is once again fired in to make the final score 3-1.
