Thurston Reserves FC were the visitors at British Sugar this weekend, for a League 2 fixture where Rovers were looking to build on last Saturday's last minute win, to try and keep themselves in the promotion race.
Rovers made a couple of changes from last week's team with Ryan Maxwell and Taran Alexandru returning to the starting line up.
Stand in boss for the day, Geoff Green, tried to instill a bit of belief and confidence into the squad, hoping that Rovers would finally deliver the kind of performance that they have been threatening to produce all season.
The chat certainly seemed to have the desired effect as a sometimes slow to start Rovers, came flying out of the blocks and raced into a 5-0 lead after only 25 minutes.
Top scorer, Tom Tawell, got them on the way after only 5 minutes, when he was put clear and made no mistake, when slotting the ball past the Thurston keeper.
Shortly after, Ross (I wanna play upfront) Booty found the ball at his feet 30 yards out. He then went on to beat 2 Thurston defenders before expertly firing the Whites into a 2 goal lead. (Was that ok Ross?)
Skipper Ben cole then got in on the act 5 minutes later, when his long range effort found the back of the net, to make it 3-0 to Rovers.
Tom Tawell then went on to complete his 2nd hattrick of the season before 25 minutes had been played, when he was put clear through twice more and finished with confidence on both occasions to notch up his 9th and 10th goals of the season.
A shell shocked Thurston then seemed to get their act together and the remainder of the half was a far more even affair and passed by without any further major incidents, although the visitors did start to look very dangerous at set pieces.
Geoff Green was obviously delighted with the squad's first half performance and with the confidence with which they had played but he did try to warn his side not to become too complacent and that he wanted to see them try and keep up the intencity that they showed in the opening half an hour.
The first 15 minutes of the second half were slightly disappointing from a Rovers point of view though as the Whites struggled to knock the ball around like they had during the first period and were guilty of giving away possession far too easily.
The visitors were then gifted a goal, something that Rovers seem to do on a weekly basis, when a mis throw from keeper Max Bell fell straight at the feet of a Thurston striker, who slotted the ball into the rovers ungaurded net.
Green then made 3 changes, bringing on Mauraup Mirel, Harry Bell and giving a debut to Andy Olley, in an attempt to wake up a sleepy second half Rovers.
Within minutes of his arrival, Andy Olley latched on to a perfectly weighted through ball and showed great composure, as he fired home his first goal for the club.
10 minutes later Ryan Maxwell made it 7-1 to the home side, when his long range effort bounced awkwardly in front of the Thurston keeper and found its way into the back of the net, for his first goal of the season.
Thurston then doubled their tally for the afternoon with arguably the best goal of the afternoon, with a fierce shot on the turn from the edge of the area, which gave Max Bell no chance.
10 minutes from time Rovers completed their goal scoring for the afternoon when frontman Andy Olley again raced clear of the visitors back 4, to finish well and for Rovers to complete a fine afternoon's work.
The Whites will look for a similar perfromance next time out when they host Bury Wanderers FC, in League 2 action, in 2 week's time.
