After recent disappointing results and performances, a trip to high-flying Hayes Post was never gonna be easy for the BA boys. Again a few last minute 'drop-outs' added to the Managers selection headaches and to the team’s natural balance with players forced out of position.
With nothing to separate the two teams after the opening exchanges, BA gained confidence with good use of the ball, but sloppy defending allowed Hayes to gain control with 3 goals in quick succession. The first 2 goals came as a result of Hayes turning defence into attack to score with two identical finishes. Quick breakaways from the Postal front two before unselfishly playing the ball across goal for their partner to tap home. The third also a tap-in from an un-challenged header from a set piece.
In recent weeks, the loss of an early goal has seen the BA boys drop their heads but today was different. BA seemed to gain composure and continued playing some attractive passing football due to Marky Peters swapping position with Benny Hoag and along with 'H' 'bossing' the midfield. As half-time approached an early slide-rule pass from 'H' allowed Hogan, who had previously been denied by an outstanding save, to slot the ball under the approaching goalie.
At 3-1 BA had some belief about them but were dealt a killer blow right on the stroke of half-time. Macca dispossessed in a poor position by the impressive Postal striker who ran on to calmly slot the ball past the approaching Knoxy. Bloody 4-1..!
Into the second half and with the game effectively over, BA dug in, worked hard and refused to buckle as Hayes enjoyed some good possession. With the game petering out and the introduction by Hayes of a couple of familiar faces, the tempo raised slightly. Knoxy denied former BA boy Ammo, a remarkable goal-line clearance from Rash and some resolute defending from Nij and new boy 'Polish Jimmy'.
Late on, Benny Hoag looked to have scored a mere consolation with an opportunist strike to double his and the teams tally. However, Marky Peters notched a quick-fire third with a neat finish from close range to pull BA within a goal from there opponents. Unfortunately, BA's hopes of an equalizer were dashed as it proved to be the last kick of the game.
Although we suffered another defeat it was heartening to see the commitment, passion and work-rate shown by all 11 players on the pitch. We need to continue this attitude for the coming weeks if we are to get back on track. This is especially important as our next fixture see's us start our defence of the County Cup away to T.V.U down in Chiswick.
