UIL Playoffs
The UIL Playoffs are the annual high school football playoffs in the state of Texas. They are organized by the University Interscholastic League (UIL), which is the governing body for high school sports in Texas.
How the playoffs work
The UIL Playoffs are single-elimination. This means that each team is only allowed one loss before they are eliminated from the playoffs. The playoffs are divided into six conferences: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A. The number of teams that advance to the playoffs from each conference varies depending on the size of the conference.
- Conference 1A (6-man): The top two teams from each district advance to the playoffs.
- Conferences 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A: The top four teams from each district advance to the playoffs.
- Conference 6A: The top four teams from each district advance to the playoffs, and the two schools with the largest enrollments automatically advance to the Division I bracket.
The playoffs begin with the bi-district round. In the bi-district round, teams from the same district play each other. The winners of the bi-district round advance to the area round. In the area round, teams from different districts play each other. The winners of the area round advance to the regional round. In the regional round, teams from different regions play each other. The winners of the regional round advance to the state semifinals. The winners of the state semifinals advance to the state championship game.
