Introduction
League 6 is the sixth tier of the English football league system, also known as the National League System (NLS). It is a regional league, with two divisions: the National League North and the National League South. Each division has 24 teams.
The top four teams in each division are automatically promoted to the National League, the fifth tier of the English football league system. The bottom four teams in each division are relegated to the Northern Premier League Premier Division or the Southern League Premier Division, the seventh tier of the English football league system.
League 6 is a semi-professional league, with some clubs having full-time professional players. The majority of clubs, however, are amateur clubs with part-time players.
History
League 6 was created in 2004, when the Football Association (FA) restructured the National League System. The league was originally called the Conference North and Conference South, but was renamed League 6 in 2016.
The first season of League 6 was in 2004-05. The champions of each division were Rushden & Diamonds and Woking.
The most successful team in League 6 history is Gateshead, who have won the league three times.
Promotion and relegation
The top four teams in each division are automatically promoted to the National League. The bottom four teams in each division are relegated to the Northern Premier League Premier Division or the Southern League Premier Division.
There is also a promotion play-off for the teams that finish fifth to eighth in each division. The winners of the play-offs also earn promotion to the National League.
