History
The Competitie was founded in 1954, as a way to provide a competitive outlet for amateur football clubs in the Netherlands. The league was originally divided into 15 regional divisions, but this number has since increased to 20.
The Competitie has been won by a variety of clubs over the years, including some of the biggest names in Dutch football, such as Ajax, Feyenoord, and PSV Eindhoven. However, the majority of the titles have been won by smaller clubs.
The Competitie has undergone a number of changes over the years, including the introduction of promotion and relegation in 1972. The league has also been expanded on a number of occasions, most recently in 2016.
Structure
The Competitie is divided into 20 regional divisions, each of which contains 14 teams. The teams play each other twice, once at home and once away.
The top two teams from each division are promoted to the Eerste Klasse, while the bottom two teams are relegated to the Tweede Klasse.
The Competitie also has a cup competition, called the KNVB Beker. The cup competition is open to all amateur football clubs in the Netherlands, and is played in a knockout format.
