The 16/2 football league is an amateur football league in Nigeria. It is named after the scoreline of the Nigeria vs. Ghana match in the 1980 African Cup of Nations, which Nigeria won. The league is open to all amateur football teams in Nigeria.
History
The 16/2 football league was founded in 1981 by a group of football enthusiasts in Nigeria. The league was initially intended to be a one-off tournament, but it was so successful that it became a permanent fixture in the Nigerian football calendar.
The 16/2 football league has been won by a number of different teams over the years, including Enugu Rangers, Kano Pillars, and Shooting Stars. The current champions are Enyimba International.
Rules and regulations
- The league is played over a 14-week season, with each team playing each other team once.
- The top four teams at the end of the season qualify for the playoffs.
- The winner of the playoffs is the champion.
- The bottom two teams are relegated to the lower division.
