Introduction
York City Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. The team will compete in the National League, the fifth level of the English football league system, in the 2023–24 season.
The club was founded in 1922 and played seven seasons in non-League football before joining the Football League in 1929. York played in the Third Division North and Fourth Division until 1959, when they were promoted for the first time.
York achieved their best run in the FA Cup in 1954–55, when they met Newcastle United in the semi-final. They lost the match 2–1, but their run is still considered one of the greatest in the club's history.
York have won the FA Trophy twice, in 1984 and 2012. They have also won the Northern Premier League twice, in 1982 and 2004.
Recent history
York City have struggled in recent years. They were relegated from League Two in 2016 and have not been able to get back to the Football League since.
The club went into administration in 2019 and were forced to sell their stadium, Bootham Crescent. They now play their home games at the LNER Community Stadium.
York City are currently managed by Michael Morton. He was appointed in December 2022 and has been tasked with leading the club back to the Football League.
Club identity
York City are nicknamed "the Minstermen", in reference to York Minster. The nickname was first used in 1954 by a journalist who came to watch the team during a successful cup run.
York's home kit is red and white stripes, while their away kit is usually blue. The club's badge features a white rose, which is the symbol of Yorkshire.
