About the NFL football league
The National First Division (NFL) is the second tier of professional football (soccer) in South Africa. It is organized by the South African Football Association (SAFA).
The NFL was founded in 1996 as a replacement for the National Soccer League (NSL). The NSL was the top tier of South African football from 1971 to 1996, but it was disbanded after the end of apartheid.
The NFL currently consists of 16 teams. The teams are divided into two groups, Group A and Group B. Each team plays each other team in their group once, home and away. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs.
The winner of the NFL playoffs is crowned the NFL champions. The NFL champions qualify to play in the MTN8, a knockout tournament that features the top eight teams in South African football.
