Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (simply known as Sundowns) is a South African professional football club based in Mamelodi, Pretoria in the Gauteng province that plays in the Premier Soccer League, the first tier of South African football league system.
The club was founded in 1970 by a group of youngsters from Mamelodi. They initially played in the local township leagues before joining the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) in 1978. Sundowns won their first NPSL title in 1989.
In 1996, Sundowns were one of the founding members of the Premier Soccer League (PSL). They have since won the PSL title a record 12 times, including four consecutive titles from 2014 to 2017.
Sundowns have also won the Nedbank Cup a record eight times, the MTN8 five times, and the Telkom Knockout four times. In 2016, they became the first South African club to win the CAF Champions League.
Recent History
Sundowns have been one of the most successful clubs in South Africa in recent years. They have won the PSL title four times in the last five seasons, as well as the Nedbank Cup and the MTN8 in 2022.
In 2021, Sundowns became the first club in Africa to win both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Women's Champions League. They also won the CAF Super Cup in 2017 and 2022.
Sundowns are currently owned by South African business magnate Patrice Motsepe. The club is known for its attacking style of play, which has been dubbed "Shoe Shine & Piano".
