Gazankulu Wolves F.C. was founded in 1977 by a group of students from the University of Pretoria. The club's name is a reference to the former Gazankulu homeland, which was located in what is now Limpopo Province, South Africa.
The club's first major success came in 1985, when they won the SAB Regional League. This victory qualified them for the National First Division, the second tier of South African football at the time.
Gazankulu Wolves F.C. spent two seasons in the National First Division before being relegated back to the SAB Regional League in 1987. The club has remained in the SAB Regional League ever since.
