York City's most successful period came in the 1970s and 1980s, when they won the Third Division championship in 1974, the Fourth Division championship in 1977, and the Football League Trophy in 1985. The club also reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1984.

York City have faced financial difficulties in recent years, and were forced to groundshare with Harrogate Town in 2014. However, the club returned to their own stadium in 2022.
