History
Widzew was founded in 1910 by Polish workers and German industrialists who were employees of the Widzew textile manufactory called WIMA. The club's name comes from the name of the city district Widzew, while RTS stands for Workers' Sports Association (in Polish: Robotnicze Towarzystwo Sportowe).
Widzew's most successful period was in the 1980s, when the club won four Polish championships and three Polish Cups. The team was led by coach Wladyslaw Zmuda and players such as Jacek Kazimierski, Wladyslaw Sobótka, and Marek Citko.
Widzew went through a financial crisis in the 1990s and was relegated to the lower leagues. The club returned to the Ekstraklasa in 2007, but has struggled to maintain its top-flight status in recent years.
