Werder Bremen is a German professional sports club based in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. Founded on 4 February 1899, Werder are best known for their professional association football team, who compete in the Bundesliga, the first tier of the German football league system. Bremen share the record for most seasons played in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, and are ranked third in the all-time Bundesliga table, behind Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.
History
- Werder was founded in 1899 by a group of students and workers.
- The club's first home ground was a field on the banks of the Weser River.
- Werder won their first major trophy in 1903, when they won the Norddeutscher Meister.
- The club joined the Bundesliga in 1963, and have since won four Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokals, and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1992.
- Werder have also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League on two occasions, in 1982 and 2009.
