Introduction
PAOK FC (Panthessalonikios Athlitikos Omilos Konstantinoupoliton, "Pan-Thessalonian Athletic Club of Constantinopolitans") is a Greek professional football club based in Thessaloniki, Macedonia. They are one of the top domestic clubs, the most widely supported in Northern Greece and with the third largest fanbase in the country.
PAOK was founded on 20 April 1926 by Greek refugees who fled to Thessaloniki from Constantinople in the wake of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922). They play their home games at Toumba Stadium, a 29,000 seating capacity football ground.
PAOK have won the Greek championship three times (in 1976, 1985 and 2019), the Greek Cup 17 times, and the Greek Super Cup 3 times. They have also reached the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in 1991.
History
PAOK was founded in 1926 by Greek refugees who fled to Thessaloniki from Constantinople. The club's name, along with the club's emblem, the Byzantine-style double-headed eagle with retracted wings, honours the memory of the people and places (mostly from the city of Constantinople) that once belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire.
PAOK quickly became one of the top clubs in Greece, winning their first Greek championship in 1976. They went on to win the Greek championship again in 1985 and 2019, and the Greek Cup 17 times.
PAOK's greatest European achievement came in 1991, when they reached the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. They lost the final to Barcelona, but the achievement was still considered a major success for the club.
Recent seasons
PAOK have been one of the most consistent teams in Greece in recent years. They have finished in the top three of the Greek Super League every season since 2015, and they have won the Greek Cup twice in that time.
PAOK are currently managed by Razvan Lucescu. The Romanian coach has been in charge of the club since 2019, and he has led them to two Greek Cup titles and two second-place finishes in the Greek Super League.
