Team Melli
Team Melli (Persian: ??? ???), also known as the Iran national football team, is the national team of Iran and is controlled by the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI).
The team's nickname is "Team Melli" (meaning "The National Team" in Persian), but they have also been called "Persian Stars", "Shiran e Iran" (meaning "The Iranian Lions" or "The Lions of Persia"), "Shirdilan", "Lion Hearts" and "Princes of Persia".
History
Football was introduced to Iran in the early 20th century by British residents and American missionaries. The first Iranian football team was formed in 1921, and the team joined FIFA in 1945.
Team Melli has qualified for the FIFA World Cup 5 times, in 1978, 1998, 2006, 2014 and 2022. Their best performance was in 1978, when they reached the quarter-finals.
Team Melli has also won the AFC Asian Cup 3 times, in 1968, 1972 and 1976.
