Introduction
Sporting Clube de Portugal (Portuguese pronunciation: ['sp??tig 'kluß? ð? pu?tu'?al]), otherwise referred to as Sporting CP or simply Sporting (particularly within Portugal), or as Sporting Lisbon in other countries, is a Portuguese sports club based in Lisbon.
Noted for the wide array of sports departments and sporting disciplines it houses, as well as for the number of trophies won by them, it is best known for its men's professional football team playing in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. Its youth academy has helped produce footballers such as Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo.
History
Sporting CP was founded on 1 July 1906 by a group of students from the Real Liceu de Lisboa. The club's first president was José Maria de Albuquerque.
Sporting CP won its first Primeira Liga title in 1923. The club has since won a total of 19 Primeira Liga titles, second only to Benfica's 37 titles.
Sporting CP has also won the Taça de Portugal a total of 21 times, more than any other club in Portugal.
Stadium
Sporting CP's home stadium is the Estádio José Alvalade. The stadium was built in 1956 and has a capacity of 50,000.
The Estádio José Alvalade was renovated in 2003 and 2010. The stadium hosted the UEFA Euro 2004 final.
