Kyoto Sanga FC is a Japanese professional football club based in Kyoto. They compete in the J1 League, the top flight of Japanese football.
The club was founded in 1992 as Kyoto Purple Sanga. They changed their name to Kyoto Sanga in 2007.
History
Kyoto Sanga FC was founded in 1992 by the merger of two local clubs, Kyoto Shiko Club and Kyoto Furitsu Shukei Club. The club's first season was in the JFL, the second tier of Japanese football.
In 1995, Kyoto Sanga FC won the JFL and were promoted to the J1 League. They finished their first season in the J1 League in 11th place.
Kyoto Sanga FC's best season came in 2000, when they finished in third place in the J1 League. They also reached the final of the Emperor's Cup that year, but lost to Júbilo Iwata.
The club has since struggled to maintain their top-flight status, and have been relegated to the J2 League on three occasions.

The stadium has a capacity of 20,230. It was opened in 1997.
