Gateshead Football Club is an English professional football club based in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The club was founded in 1889 and currently competes in the National League North, the fifth tier of English football. Gateshead's home ground is the International Stadium, which has a capacity of 10,900.
History
Gateshead were one of the founder members of the Northern League in 1889. They won the league championship in 1899-00 and 1901-02. Gateshead also won the FA Amateur Cup in 1903 and 1911.
In 1921, Gateshead joined the Football League Third Division North. They remained in the Third Division North until 1969, when they were promoted to the Third Division. Gateshead spent two seasons in the Third Division before being relegated back to the Fourth Division in 1971.
Gateshead spent the next 20 years in the Fourth Division, with a brief spell in the Third Division in 1977-78. In 1991, Gateshead were relegated to the Conference National, the fifth tier of English football.
Gateshead spent 10 seasons in the Conference National, with a brief spell in the Football League Two in 2002-03. In 2010, Gateshead were relegated back to the Conference National.
Gateshead have been in the National League North since 2015. They finished as runners-up in the league in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
