Northampton Town Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Northampton, England. They currently compete in EFL League One, the third tier of English football.
History
The club was founded in 1897 and competed in the Midland League for two seasons before joining the Southern League in 1901. They were crowned Southern League champions in 1908-09, which allowed them to contest the 1909 FA Charity Shield.
Northampton were admitted to the Football League in 1920 and spent the next 38 years in the Third Division South. They reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1960 and 1961.
The Cobblers were relegated to the Fourth Division in 1968, but bounced back to the Third Division in 1970. They spent the next 20 years in the Third Division, before being relegated to the Fourth Division in 1990.
Northampton won promotion back to the Third Division in 1991 and then to the Second Division in 1997. They reached the League Cup quarter-finals in 1999.
The Cobblers were relegated to the Third Division in 2003 and then to the Conference Premier in 2009. They won promotion back to League Two in 2013 and then to League One in 2020.
Stadium
Northampton Town play their home games at Sixfields Stadium, which has a capacity of 7,798. The stadium was opened in 1994 and replaced the County Ground, which was the Cobblers' home from 1897 to 1994.
