NorthEast United Football Club, commonly referred to as NorthEast United, is an Indian professional football club based in Guwahati, Assam that competes in the Indian Super League (ISL), the top flight of Indian football.
The club was founded on 13 April 2014 during the inaugural season of Indian Super League. NorthEast United represents the 8 states known as North East India, consisting of Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Mizoram.
History
NorthEast United was founded by John Abraham, an Indian actor and film producer, and Jaya Balan, an entrepreneur. The club's first head coach was Eelco Schattorie.
NorthEast United finished the inaugural season of the Indian Super League in fourth place. The club's best performance in the ISL came in the 2020-21 season, when they finished runners-up to Mumbai City FC.
Stadium
NorthEast United's home stadium is the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. The stadium has a capacity of 25,000 spectators.
