Mercenaries FC: Mutare’s Rebel Spirit
Founded in 2015 by a group of players disillusioned with the rigid structure of Chipolopolo FC, Mercenaries FC emerged as a spirited social soccer team in Mutare City, Zimbabwe. The split stemmed from clashes over inclusivity and the desire to prioritize competitiveness over camaraderie , leading the ”rebels” to form a squad focused on unity, fun, and community connection.
Based in the scenic eastern highlands of Mutare, Mercenaries FC quickly became a local sensation in the Mutare Social Football Association (MUSFA) league. Known for their eclectic mix of seasoned players, weekend warriors, and enthusiastic newcomers, the team adopted a motto: “Hatipase Chimuti.” Our vibrant kits and raucous sideline supporters became fixtures at matches, where flair and teamwork trumped results.
Though initially seen as underdogs, Mercenaries FC carved a niche as MUSFA’s most beloved “social club.” They organized charity tournaments, funded youth coaching clinics, and became notorious for post-match barbecues that drew entire neighbourhoods. On the field, our free-flowing style earned respect.
Today, Mercenaries FC remains a symbol of Mutare’s grassroots soccer culture, proving that a team built on friendship and community can thrive. As Captain Abel Musarandoga once joked, “We’re mercenaries only in name—here, everyone’s family.”
