Gor Mahia Football Club is a Kenyan professional football club based in Nairobi. They are the most successful club in Kenyan football, having won the Kenyan Premier League a record 20 times, and the FKF President's Cup a record 11 times. They are also the only Kenyan club to have won an African continental title, the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1987.
History
Gor Mahia was founded on 17 February 1968 by a group of Luo community leaders, including Tom Mboya, who was then the Minister of Economic Planning and Development. The club was named after a legendary Luo medicine man, Gor Mahia, who was known for his magical powers.
Gor Mahia quickly rose to prominence in Kenyan football, winning their first Kenyan Premier League title in 1968. They went on to win the league a further 19 times, most recently in 2023. They have also won the FKF President's Cup a record 11 times, most recently in 2022.
In 1987, Gor Mahia made history by becoming the first Kenyan club to win an African continental title, the African Cup Winners' Cup. They defeated Cameroonian club Tonnerre Yaoundé 2-0 in the final.
Recent History
Gor Mahia have continued to be one of the most successful clubs in Kenyan football in recent years. They have won the Kenyan Premier League four times in the last five seasons, and the FKF President's Cup twice in the same period.
In 2019, Gor Mahia reached the final of the CAF Confederation Cup, but they were defeated by Tunisian club Esperance Sportive de Tunis.
