The team was founded in 2008 as part of the Glentoran Academy, which was established to provide a more professional approach to youth development at the club. The academy's aims are to develop players to the best of their ability, promote equality, and encourage fair play and sportsmanship.
The Glentoran 2001s have been successful in recent years, winning the Nibfa National League title in 2019 and 2020. The team has also competed in several international tournaments, including the Milk Cup and the Kennedy Cup.
